Do I have to be an alcoholic to go to an AA meeting
An open meeting is open to anyone, including family and people who are simply curious. A closed meeting is for people who have a desire to stop drinking. Which is which is marked on every meeting on every city page.
What happens at a first meeting
People sit down, someone reads, and then either one member tells their own story or a topic goes round the room. You can sit through the whole hour without saying anything. Nobody takes a register and nobody asks you to explain yourself.
Is there a charge
No. There is no fee and nobody signs you up for anything. A basket goes round for the room's expenses and you are free to pass it on.
Are the times on these pages reliable
They are the times the groups publish themselves, and groups do change night or venue without much notice. If you are driving any distance for one particular meeting, it is worth checking with the group first.
Can I go to a meeting for someone else
Open meetings welcome family. Going to one yourself is a common first step when the person you are worried about is not ready to go.
