Most meetings run an hour, start on time, and look like any other room full of people having a conversation. Nobody will put you on the spot. If you would rather listen for the first month, that is a normal way to start. If it is not for you, nothing happens. No one follows it up.
Can I go if the person I am worried about will not?
Going along by yourself is allowed, and it is more common than people think. There are also groups specifically for families and friends, which run separately from the ones listed here. Nobody in the room will ask you to account for anybody but yourself.
