Questions about AA in Illinois

How many A.A. meetings are there in Illinois?

3,517 meetings a week across 302 cities, and every one of them has a page of its own with the day, the time and the venue. The cities with the most are at the top of this page.

Where in Illinois are most of the meetings?

Chicago holds the most, 875 meetings. Then Rockford with 112 and Mokena with 96.

What is a first meeting actually like?

Most meetings run an hour, start on time, and look like any other room full of people having a conversation. Newcomers are usually asked if there is anybody new, and you can stay quiet through that too. Plenty of people sit through their first few without speaking. Sitting near the door is allowed, and so is leaving early.

Could a meeting have moved since this was published?

They are the times the groups publish themselves, and groups do change night, time or venue without much notice. A group that moves room, or folds, or starts a new night does not always update the list it is on, so a page can sit a few weeks behind the room. Turning up to a dark hall is the one genuinely discouraging thing that can happen, and a phone call prevents it.

How far do people travel to get to a meeting?

Plenty of members have a regular meeting twenty miles from where they live. Sharing a lift is common, and asking after a meeting is the usual way it starts. If getting there is the problem rather than the meeting, say so in the room. It is a solvable one.
