Questions about AA in California

How many A.A. meetings does California have?

11,803 meetings a week, spread across 542 cities. That is what is in the published lists for California, and a group that has never registered is in none of them.

What is the busiest city in California?

That is Fresno at 221 a week, which is 2 per cent of everything listed in the state. Then Modesto with 206 and Oakland with 182.

There is nothing near me on this list. What do I do?

Open the nearest city that is. Its page counts what meets within 25 miles as well as what meets in the city, so your town may well be inside somebody else's circle.

Do A.A. meetings cost anything?

No, and there is no membership to buy either. A basket goes round partway through for the room's expenses, the rent and the coffee, and you are free to pass it on. Nobody checks whether you contributed, and nobody mentions it.

Can I attend one without leaving the house?

Online and telephone meetings both exist, and neither asks you to be anywhere in particular. Cameras off is normal and nobody comments on it. You can listen to a dozen before you ever say anything. Either kind counts, and there is no hierarchy between them.

What is the difference between an open and a closed meeting?

An open meeting takes all comers. A closed one is for people who want to stop. Closed meetings exist so members can speak freely about things they would not say in front of a room of visitors. Nobody is asked to prove anything. When in doubt, an open meeting is the easier first room.
