How do rooms treat someone who has started drinking again?

Nothing is taken away from you, because nothing was given on condition. Nobody is struck off and nobody is made to explain themselves, and a great many members have been through it more than once. Nobody keeps a record of how long anyone was away.

What does a sponsor actually do?

A member you ask, who can say yes or no like anybody else. The arrangement is informal and unpaid, it starts with one person asking another, and it carries none of the confidentiality protections a clinician's would. You do not need one to go to your first meeting, or your tenth.
