Nothing matches all of those at once. Try taking one off.
What these mean
- Open
- Anyone may attend, including family, friends and people who are simply curious. Nobody has to say why they came.
- Closed
- For people who have a desire to stop drinking. If you are not sure that is you, an open meeting is the safe first choice.
- Newcomer
- Aimed at people at their first few meetings. Someone will usually explain how it works before it starts.
- Men
- Only men attend.
- Wheelchair Access
- The room can be reached and used in a wheelchair.
- Discussion
- A topic is raised and whoever wants to speak does. You can sit through the whole hour without saying anything.
- Speaker
- One member tells their own story for most of the hour. Nothing is asked of anyone else, which makes it the easiest kind to sit through on a first visit.
- Big Book
- Reading and discussion from Alcoholics Anonymous, the book members call the Big Book.

Questions about AA in Galax
How many AA meetings are within driving distance of Galax?
31 inside 20 miles, across 6 cities. Every row says which town it is in and how far.
Is there an AA meeting every day in Galax?
Every day. Monday is the busiest with 7 meetings, and no day is empty.
What is the difference between an open and a closed meeting in Galax?
Most of what is listed is closed rather than open: 17 closed against 4 open. Closed means it is for people who want to stop drinking themselves.
How many AA groups are there in Galax?
6 groups listed in Galax, and each one is linked above with the meetings it holds.
Is there a men's AA meeting in Galax?
Yes, 2 men's meetings are listed here.
Do I have to give my name at an AA meeting?
Anonymity is a tradition members keep rather than a rule anyone can enforce. The tradition is held by the people in the room rather than enforced by anyone, and in practice it is held seriously. Arriving early is worth it if you would rather not walk in to a full room.
Is there a fee for AA meetings in Galax?
No. Meetings are free, and that is not a local arrangement. Groups pay their own rent out of what members put in the basket, which is what self supporting means in practice. You can go to as many as you like in a week at no cost.
