Questions about treatment in Virginia
How much does rehab cost in Virginia?
Virginia has no statewide price for rehab, and on the publicly funded side it has no statewide fee schedule either. Each of the 40 community services boards is directed by law to set and collect its own charges, so what one board's area quotes will not match the next one over. That leaves nothing to look up and one thing to ask for: what your board asks of somebody at your income, and what it does when that is still too much.
What are some of the best recovery centers in Virginia?
Virginia publishes no ranking of recovery centers, and the license it issues a center says what that place may do, not how well it does it. The license is still the thing to ask about, because it names the services the center may deliver, and on Medicaid a bed is approved only at the ASAM level the assessment supports, so a center not running that level cannot take the person. Reach counts for as much: 55 of the cities listed hold exactly one center, which often makes the real choice the local one or a longer trip.
Do you have to pay to go to rehab for drugs?
Not always. Virginia designates its community services boards the single point of entry to publicly funded treatment, and between them they are how rehab reaches people with no insurance at all. Each board is locally run rather than directed from Richmond, charges on a scale that moves with income, and the ones publishing that policy say nobody is turned away for being unable to pay. Alcohol and withdrawal care are in it, not only drugs. Ask yours what it has for somebody with no coverage.
Does Virginia Medicaid pay for rehab?
Yes. Virginia Medicaid pays for rehab under a named benefit, Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services, which covers the whole continuum including inpatient detoxification and a residential stay, and 236 of the centers listed also offer medication for opioid use disorder. Every member is now under Cardinal Care, so the authorization for a bed comes from your health plan. The exception is rent: a sober living bed is billed apart from the care given inside it, while a ride to an appointment is covered.
How do people go to rehab without insurance?
Most do it by getting insurance first, and Virginia is a short route to it: the state took the Medicaid expansion, so for an adult under 65 the test is income rather than having children, and the line sits at 138 percent of the federal poverty level. Applications are taken in any month, while a subsidized plan from Virginia's own marketplace waits for open enrollment or a qualifying life event.
What qualifies you for inpatient rehab?
Inpatient rehab is approved on a written assessment scored against the six ASAM dimensions, and a request that does not meet the criteria for the level asked for is refused. Only 59 of the centers listed hold a bed, so the level and a vacancy both have to line up. What does not have to wait is the admission: for a bed at any intensity the center has one business day after you arrive to file, so the paperwork follows the person in rather than holding them at the door.
How long does a person go to rehab for drugs?
Rehab for drugs runs as long as the assessment keeps supporting it, because Virginia sets no yearly ceiling on the days at any level, from intensive outpatient up to a medically managed bed. What ends a stay is the criteria no longer being met, tested again each time the center asks to extend. Alcohol is no different, and a residential program has to write your step down on the day you arrive, so what comes next is written down before the stay has really started.
How long does a person stay in a detox center?
Days rather than weeks, and in Virginia a detox is not always a separate stay at all. Withdrawal care is covered as a component of whatever level you are in, ordinary outpatient treatment included, so some people are brought through it without a bed. Where a bed is the right call, the map matters: a detox unit sits in 70 of the listed centers and 32 cities. Coming off alcohol or benzodiazepines after heavy daily use is the dangerous case, so bring in a doctor or call the number at the top of this page first.
