Questions about treatment in Maine

How much does rehab cost in Maine?

Rehab in Maine has no set price, and three levers move it. Level of care is the first, because a residential program pays for a bed and overnight staff while outpatient pays for the sessions only. Who is covering the bill is the second. The third is the drive, a real expense in a state this long, and the reason to ask about telehealth: MaineCare covers it, including by phone, and 103 of the centers listed offer it. Ask what a whole program costs, then ask how much of it can happen without the drive.

Does MaineCare pay for rehab?

Yes. MaineCare is Maine's name for Medicaid rather than a separate state program, and it pays across the whole continuum: outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient, medically supervised withdrawal management, a residential stay, and medication for opioid use disorder. Alcohol sits on the same footing as any other drug. Since July 2023 a residential placement has gone through an independent review of the level of care, so what opens that door is an assessment rather than a center's own say-so.

Do you have to pay to go to rehab for drugs?

Not always. Maine's route for somebody who cannot pay for rehab has no name to ask for: the money follows the service instead. The Office of Behavioral Health buys treatment from licensed agencies under contract and covers the bill for people who are uninsured or underinsured. It reaches counseling, community withdrawal management and medication, which 93 of the centers listed provide. So ask an agency which of its own services is state funded this year.

How to pay for rehab if you don't have insurance?

Without insurance, paying for rehab in Maine comes down to two routes and the first gets missed. MaineCare takes applications in any month, with no enrollment season, and covers adults on household incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level. Above that line Maine runs its own marketplace at CoverME.gov rather than sending residents to the federal site, and losing MaineCare opens a 90 day window to buy a plan there. If neither fits, ask a center what an assessment alone costs.

How long does a person go to rehab for drugs?

Thirty days is the figure most residential rehab programs in Maine quote, and here that is more than market custom: MaineCare's agreement with the federal government holds the state to a statewide average no longer than that in residential settings, with any longer stay argued case by case. Drugs and alcohol are not on separate clocks; the assessment sets the length either way. Outpatient treatment is the longer, lighter shape, counted in months of sessions, and it is how most people here are treated.

How do you qualify for inpatient rehab?

Maine's limit is supply before criteria, and an assessment still has to find that treatment where you live would not hold you before inpatient rehab is on the table. The counts show why: 15 of the centers listed offer a residential stay against 119 offering outpatient care, and the nearest bed can sit in another county. The assessment weighs withdrawal risk, whether home is a safe place to get sober, and anything being treated alongside the drinking or drug use.

How long does a person stay in a detox center?

Days rather than weeks is the honest answer for a detox stay, and the substance and the dose set where in that range you land. Where it happens is the Maine problem: 17 of the centers listed run a detox, hospitals carry much of the medically supervised withdrawal, and MaineCare pays either way. The part to arrange rather than improvise is alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, which after heavy daily use can be life threatening without medical cover. How do I stage an intervention?

Before you stage an intervention, settle where the person would go if they said yes today, because what collapses these conversations is agreement with nowhere to take it. A scripted family confrontation is one method and not a requirement: a direct private talk at a sober hour, with one concrete next step, does as much. Maine also places an OPTIONS liaison in every county, a behavioral health clinician whose job includes helping families work out that step.
