Questions about treatment in Mississippi
How much does rehab cost in Mississippi?
Nobody can quote a figure for rehab in Mississippi, because the same program bills three ways: Mississippi Medicaid for the few groups of adults it covers, a private plan where there is one, and its own rate for everybody else. That third rate is where most Mississippi callers land. Every provider the state certifies has to hold a sliding fee scale set against income, so what you would pay is a question about your household rather than about the program's list.
Do you have to pay to go to rehab for drugs?
Not always. Mississippi's mental health department provides services at the programs it runs itself at no cost, and at the regional community mental health centers its own money pays for people with no other payer source, for alcohol and for a detox as readily as for drugs. Its standards bar a provider it certifies from turning you away over inability to pay and require a sliding fee scale. None of that is offered at the door, so ask a center whether it holds state funding and where you would sit on its fee scale.
Does Medicaid or Medicare pay for rehab?
Medicaid pays for part of it, and Medicare is the separate program for people age 65 and older or on long term disability. Mississippi Medicaid covers the treatment rather than the bed: assessment, counseling to a ceiling of 36 individual sessions a year, peer support, and medication for opioid use disorder through certified treatment programs. It holds no payment rate for a residential stay, which is why the state's mental health department funds those and calls itself the payer of last resort.
What is the maximum income for Medicaid in Mississippi?
There is no single maximum, because Mississippi Medicaid covers categories of people, not low income by itself. A pregnant woman qualifies under 194 percent of the poverty level, and a parent living with children under 18 meets an income limit of $498 a month for a household of three. An adult with no children or disability fits no category at any income, and below the poverty line the marketplace gives no credit either. A decision takes 45 days at most; where none fits, state money pays instead.
Why is it so hard to get into rehab?
It is hard to get into rehab here because the places are few and the funded ones are rationed. Only 27 of the Mississippi centers listed offer a residential stay. On the state funded side a pregnant or parenting person has to be reached within 48 hours, while other uninsured adults are aimed at a residential place within 14 days of a referral, which is a waiting list described politely. Ask to be put on more than one list.
How long does a person stay in rehab for drugs?
A residential rehab stay is usually quoted at 30 days, with 60 and 90 day programs above it, and the substance is not what decides which fits. An assessment does, including whether a bed is the right place to start, and alcohol is not the shorter stay. Mississippi's funded ladder has two residential stages, a primary stay and a transitional one after it, so ask which stage a quoted number covers, and ask what it counts as completing the program, which a funded one has to define up front.
How long does a person stay in a detox center?
A detox stay is counted in nights, and for most people it ends inside a week. The harder question in Mississippi is where: centers in 19 of the cities listed run one, and on the funded side withdrawal management sits inside the residential programs rather than in a unit of its own, so the detox and the treatment are often one admission. Alcohol and benzodiazepines are the withdrawals that turn dangerous, so speak to a doctor or call the number at the top of this page first.
What do they do in rehab?
Rehab starts with an assessment, then becomes structured hours: individual, group and family therapy, case management for whatever is stacked up behind it, medication where it applies, and time with a peer support specialist who has been through it. 59 of the Mississippi centers listed offer medication. Programs the state certifies also carry continuing care planning, which is the part that covers the months after you leave, so ask what yours says before a program starts.
