Showing 88 of 88 meetings in Scotch Plains.
Nothing matches all of those at once. Try taking one off.
What these mean
- Open
- Anyone may attend, including family, friends and people who are simply curious. Nobody has to say why they came.
- Closed
- For people who have a desire to stop drinking. If you are not sure that is you, an open meeting is the safe first choice.
- Newcomer
- Aimed at people at their first few meetings. Someone will usually explain how it works before it starts.
- Discussion
- A topic is raised and whoever wants to speak does. You can sit through the whole hour without saying anything.
- Speaker
- One member tells their own story for most of the hour. Nothing is asked of anyone else, which makes it the easiest kind to sit through on a first visit.
- Big Book
- Reading and discussion from Alcoholics Anonymous, the book members call the Big Book.
- Step Study
- The group works through the Twelve Steps in order.

Nobody checks, and nobody is turned away for being unsure. There is no membership process, no assessment and nobody deciding whether you qualify. Going to look is a legitimate reason to go.
What are the twelve steps?
A written sequence, and the literature that goes with it is the Big Book. They start with admitting that drinking has become unmanageable and end with helping other people who are in the same position. A discussion meeting is a gentler first visit than a step meeting.
