Questions about AA in Salem
What is listed near Salem?
Salem has 2 meetings in the list above, so it reaches out to 25 miles and picks up 22 in nearby towns.
Is there an AA meeting every day in Salem?
Every day. Thursday is the busiest with 6 meetings, and no day is empty.
What is the difference between an open and a closed meeting in Salem?
5 of the 24 listed here are marked open, which means anyone can attend, including family. 3 are marked closed, for people who want to stop drinking.
What is the difference between a group and a meeting?
One, and everything it runs is listed above. A group is the set of people who hold a meeting, so one group can account for several entries in the week.
Can I go to meetings if I am on medication for drinking?
Yes, and it is worth being ready for the fact that opinions in the room vary. Individual members sometimes voice firm views and those views are their own, so a decision about prescribed medication belongs with the person who prescribed it. The schedule above gives the day and venue for each one.
Is going to meetings enough on its own?
No. A.A. is a free fellowship that meets regularly and rehab is clinical treatment that costs money. Detox is the clearest dividing line: withdrawing from alcohol can be medically dangerous, and a meeting is not equipped for it while a clinical service is. Doing both is common and neither rules the other out.
What is the best meeting to start with?
Choose on the practical details rather than on anything you have heard. People often try three or four rooms before one of them fits, and that is the ordinary pattern rather than a bad sign. Arriving early gives you the easiest seat to take.
